Below is our recent interview with Uri Marchand, Co-Founder and CEO of Overwolf:

Q: For those who have never heard of it, how would you describe Overwolf?

A: Overwolf is an engine for building in-game apps, just like Unity is an engine for building games. With over 30,000 creators, 90,000 in-game apps/mods, and 18 million monthly active users, Overwolf is the all-in-one platform that enables in-game creators to build, distribute, and monetize in-game apps and mods. We coined the term ‘in-game creators’ to categorize this new generation of in-game app creators and mod authors. Overwolf brings in-game creators, or diverse and talented app creator and mod author communities, together through a shared love of creation to build unforgettable moments and experiences in gameplay. We are on a mission to unite the in-game creator community and empower them to make a living doing what they love – developing truly awesome gaming experiences.

Q: What is main advantage of your software platform for game developers?

A: Overwolf just launched CurseForge Core, a new service that will accelerate the User-Generated Content (UGC) movement by enabling publishers to easily integrate mods safely and seamlessly into their existing and new games. This benefits game developers, as game development costs continue to rise, adding community-created elements can be instrumental to increasing engagement and retention.

Overwolf wants to help reduce the barrier with game developers in regards to UGC. After raising money, most developers are focused on building a game and creating the best gameplay experience. They may want to embrace and integrate user-generated content, but struggle to handle content moderation and creators’ payments.

With CurseForge Core, Overwolf manages content moderation, UGC-related live ops, and creator payment, enabling game developers and studios to access community-created content seamlessly. We work with developers to understand their dos and don’ts and then ensure that we execute their specific strategy so that UGC integration is faster and more cost-effective.

Q: What’s the best thing about Overwolf that people might not know about?

A: Overwolf has enabled in-game creators to fulfill their visions, make games better, and ultimately create a brand new profession: the in-game creator. Supporting in-game creators’ success is at the center of everything we do. With this funding, we are able to continue to champion and celebrate the rise of the in-game creator and develop a sustainable career path like we’ve done with Amit Tsur who single-handedly created the app DotaPlus which has reached over half a million downloads.

Q: You’ve recently raised $52.5 Million in Series C funding; can you tell us something more?

A: Overwolf believes in a future in which the community can participate with the game developer in creating new, moderated, and safe game experiences. In our eyes, the more content and customizability a game has, the more likely a gamer will keep experiencing its content and by that extending the longevity of the game and generating more value for game developers and publishers in the long run. We are at a UGC inflection point and the future growth and sustainability of the industry lie largely in the hands of creators, especially those of in-game apps and mods.

Q: What can we expect from you later in 2021? What are your plans?

A: We have always been, and will always be, about the in-game creator. The goals for this funding round are to scale operations and to do more meaningful investments to support in-game creators. The investment will help us scale our marketing and growth efforts, with the plan to grow our team to 120. 2021 will be a year of explosive growth for us at Overwolf.
