Below is our recent interview with Srinivas Ramanathan, CEO at eG Innovations:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to eG Innovations?

A: These days, almost all businesses rely on IT for their daily business activities. When the IT applications are slow or not working, the business suffers. Imagine in today’s scenario what happens if your employees are working from home and remote access to the workplace fails. Business would grind to a halt. It is this scenario that eG Innovations’ products and services aim to safeguard against. We develop solutions for monitoring, diagnosis and reporting on the performance of IT applications and infrastructure. Our focus is to simplify the work that IT managers, system administrators, application administrations and other IT staff have to do to ensure that their key IT applications and infrastructure are available and performing well, so their users can be happy and productive.

In the past, IT applications used to be simple. They were client-server based and to troubleshoot them one had to look at the client, the network, or the server. Today’s applications are much more complex. They can be web-based, can be native mobile apps, or they may involve thin clients like Citrix and virtual desktop technologies. Further, there are usually a multitude of server and application components involved, and some of these may be remote, being provided by a third party. In addition, these applications and servers may run on virtual platforms within your network, or they may be hosted in the public cloud. All of this makes performance diagnosis and troubleshooting very challenging. This is where our solutions come in.

Q: You’ve recently announced eG Enterprise v7; could you tell us something more? What’s new?

A: In the past, IT performance monitoring used to focus on system resources like CPU, memory, disk and so on. For example, if the CPU usage of your servers was less than 50%, you were doing a good job as an IT manager. Resource usage levels are no longer the measure of IT performance in today’s digital world. The success of any IT initiative is determined by user experience. And user experience is not just about how fast your application responds. It also encompasses mean time to repair – how long does it take to bring the application back up after it has an issue, accuracy of diagnosis – how accurately is a problem fixed, so the problem does not reoccur, proactiveness – how often do users notice a problem before you (the administrator) do, and the ability to plan for capacity growth without impacting user experience. eG Enterprise v7 makes user experience monitoring and management central to your IT application and infrastructure management strategy.

In this release, we’ve added new ways of monitoring user experience, using a combination of synthetic simulations and real user monitors, so IT managers and administrators can track the experience their users are seeing. Once an IT manager sees what user experience they are delivering, the immediate next question is “Why is it slow? What can I do to improve it?”. In this release, we’ve added the ability to drill down to understand better where the problem lies – is it the network, database, application code, cloud platform etc. Many clients use our solution to monitor employees remotely accessing their applications and infrastructure using technologies like Citrix and VMware Horizon. We have added a number of new capabilities to allow IT operations teams get greater visibility into the latest release of these technologies. For example, Citrix services today can be delivered from Citrix Cloud. eG Enterprise v7 is the first solution that provides integrated monitoring of Citrix Cloud and the on-premise environment that an organization may be using to deliver Citrix services.

New visual dashboards make it possible for IT admins and managers to easily see where their bottlenecks are then fix them. With the advent of different standards and IT compliance requirements, IT managers also have to report on usage of the different services they support. In this release, we’ve added a number of reporting enhancements intended to make it easy for IT managers to respond to such requirements.

With any new release, we have to support new versions and technology advancements that different IT application and infrastructure platform vendors introduce in their products. In eG Enterprise v7, we’ve added support for Citrix Workspace Environment Manager (WEM), App Layering, SD-WAN, VMware AppVolumes and vSAN, SAP BusinessOne, Fiori and Hybris, Microsoft Office 365 and Salesforce, etc.

Q: Can you give us insights into your product? How does it work?

A: eG Enterprise uses a combination of agent-based and agentless monitoring to track the health and performance of the entire IT infrastructure from application code to bare metal across physical, virtual and cloud, and hybrid IT environments – from a single pane of glass. Our monitoring technology has built-in expertise for monitoring 200+ application and infrastructure components – web servers, database servers, middleware, cloud platforms, virtualization, and application technologies including Java, Microsoft .NET and PHP. Using a patented performance correlation and root cause diagnosis technology, eG Enterprise simplifies performance troubleshooting, resulting in faster problem resolution and increased operational efficiency for IT pros. This solution can be deployed fully on-premise, and we also offer this as a SaaS service from the cloud.

It is very easy to try out our solution. All you need to do is register through our web portal and you will receive instructions to download, install and configure agents. You can be up and running in minutes.

Q: What types of solutions do you provide to your clients?

A: Our solutions have broad applicability. One of the most popular use cases is monitoring of digital workspaces based on Citrix, VMware Horizon or the Desktop as a Service (DaaS) offerings from the cloud service providers. We have over 15 years of experience in this area, so our solution has specialized monitoring for these technologies.

A growing use case is monitoring of web applications running on Java or Microsoft .NET technologies. A couple of years ago, we added the ability to deep dive into the application code for these applications and pinpoint application level bottlenecks. The capability of our solution to provide application deep-dive and infrastructure-wide coverage from one console is a key differentiator.

Customers can also use our solution to monitor key business applications like SAP, PeopleSoft, Siebel, etc., and SaaS services like Microsoft Office 365 and Salesforce. We also have customers who use our products to get a single pane of glass across their entire IT landscape.

Q: What are the company’s plans and goals for the future?

A: The current scenario with most organizations having to support remote employees has increased the focus on IT. A lot of companies are focused on making sure employees can connect and work. The next phase will no doubt focus on monitoring, diagnosis and troubleshooting to make sure remote employees can get the IT service quality they need to be productive. Our goal at eG Innovations is to help our customers align IT with the business. We are focused on providing our solutions in ways that businesses need, at times when they need, and in the most effective manner, so we can help them guarantee IT service quality, minimize their technology spends, and make the most effective use of their limited IT resources (people, software and hardware).
