Rubicon is a technology company that powers a digital marketplace, provides a suite of SaaS products for waste, recycling, and smart city solutions, and collects and analyzes data for businesses and governments worldwide. Below is our recent interview with
Renaud de Viel Castel , Senior Vice President of Global Expansion at Rubicon:

Q: Please tell our audience a little about Rubicon?

A: Using technology to drive environmental innovation, our company helps turn businesses into more sustainable enterprises, and neighborhoods into greener and smarter places to live and work. Rubicon’s mission is to end waste, in all of its forms, by helping our partners find economic value in their waste streams and confidently execute on their sustainability goals. We are a Certified B Corporation, affirming that we meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance.

Q: Last year you were named Rubicon’s first Senior Vice President of Global Expansion. What does that entail on a daily basis?

A: Well, I get to meet interesting people from all over the world. Waste and recycling has no boundaries, and the waste and recycling challenges we face are global problems that we need to address with smart technology solutions. Ending waste does not stop at the border. The people I meet share the same values around sustainability, and they know that technology plays a huge part in this, so they are drawn to Rubicon and our offerings. No matter how big or small their organization is, we will customize our tech solutions to their legal and commercial environment.

Q: This year, Rubicon announced programs with the Odakyu Group in Japan and Helvetia Environnement in Switzerland to leverage Rubicon’s technology offerings in the waste and recycling space. Are these examples of Rubicon’s global expansion under your watch?

A: Yes, and we hope to have more to announce throughout 2020. The partnership agreement for the program in Japan is focused on supporting the Japanese waste and recycling industry towards a more integrated circular economy by using Rubicon’s technology to help develop a sustainable ecosystem. Rubicon’s new international technology subscription agreement with Helvetia Environnement is designed to drive innovation in the Swiss waste management industry. Needless to say, these are exciting developments to be a part of.

Q: Rubicon looks at the world of waste and recycling through the lens of technology. How has this vision been received as you engage with companies across the globe?

A: Some of the most sophisticated environmental companies in the world reach out to us because they specifically want to work with Rubicon. They ask me how technology can be integrated into waste and recycling vehicles to make their waste diversion efforts more sustainable and help reduce wasted time, wasted energy, and wasted resources. They want to understand how AI is revolutionizing an industry that has been stagnant for so long. We are using technology to provide a more sustainable and customer-centric way to handle waste challenges for businesses and governments across the world. We are providing an alternative to the old landfill model, which is refreshing to the businesses with whom we work, as they often do not know that they have a choice when it comes to who picks up their waste and recycling. We are helping the businesses that we work with achieve their waste reduction goals in concert with their business priorities and demands.
