Below is our recent interview with Ian Cameron, VP, Operations at Treeswift:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?
A: Treeswift is building the sensory and data ecosystem for the natural world by offering software and data services to stakeholders in natural resource management. Treeswift services are used in carbon capture estimation, timber value appraisal, fire mitigation, biomass understory, deforestation monitoring, advanced growth forecasting, and overall forest management.
Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?
A: Treeswift today announced Seed funding in the amount of $4.8 million, led by Pathbreaker Ventures. Other investors include Crosslink Capital, TenOneTen Ventures, Contour Venture Partners, Boom Capital Ventures, Yes VC, Susa Ventures, Draft Ventures, Anorak Ventures, S7 Ventures, Awesome People Ventures, Switch Ventures, Convective Capital, and Dorm Room Fund. The company has now raised $6.4 million to date in order to provide forest stakeholders with easily-accessible precision data and analyses.
Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?
A: Treeswift’s product is called SwiftCruise and is a drone-based solution that navigates under the forest canopy quickly and efficiently in order to collect terabytes of data within harsh forest terrain at unprecedented detail. SwiftCruise is able to extract individual tree metrics through a combination of cameras, sensors, and advanced machine learning algorithms.
Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: In the next six months, we are expanding our operations with Forestry customers across the United States. We are also working with partners interested in utilizing our under-canopy forest data to develop high quality carbon measurement protocols to bring increased accuracy, scalability, and transparency to the carbon markets. There is a lot of excitement about what we are building, so stay tuned over the next few months!
Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: We’ve assembled a team of the best from all different fields to work together and solve one of the biggest problems in forestry and climate – getting accurate, transparent, and verifiable data. The team consists of robotics and machine learning PhDs, ex-military operators, and forestry industry veterans. We are also advised by Dr. Harold Burkhart, the leading expert in forest mensuration, and Dr. Vijay Kumar, the world expert in ground and aerial vehicles. This team has built the first robot that can fly under canopy to collect forestry data.
