Below is our recent interview with Michael Hassen, General Manager at Revolution Math:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Revolution Math?
A: Love to! Revolution Math is an innovative online tutoring program designed to help 2nd-5th graders develop their math skills and an overall love of learning. The program combines an interactive learning experience with a story-based curriculum and Common Core aligned math games. Students enjoy a small class size of only 4 students, allowing them to build confidence under the instruction of a dedicated teacher.
One of our professional tutors will guide kiddos during each class, helping them gain a procedural fluency and conceptual understanding of critical math concepts. Parents can track their child’s progress online and through weekly video updates, too!
Long story short: Revolution Math helps young kiddos fall in love with math from an early age…which is something pretty cool to see.
Q: Why is now the time for a technology solution like Revolution Math?
A: In today’s world, it is increasingly challenging to find high quality tutoring that is both convenient and affordable. Revolution Math is done from the comfort of a family’s home and is also a fraction of the price as your typical learning center or part-time tutoring service.
Kids nowadays are natives when it comes to technology and much more comfortable than students of past decades…let alone generations. Our online platform is able to consistently deliver the highest caliber instruction to students, in turn creating the safest place to learn, get ahead, and even make mistakes. Revolution Math also includes a complementary software program that toggles neatly with the live sessions, allowing for students to drive home procedural fluency of important concepts taught in class.
Q: Who are the Revolution Math teachers? Do you train them?
A: Our tutors come to us from a variety of backgrounds: retired educators, current elementary school teachers, veteran tutors, doctoral candidates, etc. The one thing they all have in common is a passion and enthusiasm for math and a desire to pass that same enthusiasm onto their students. It takes a special kind of educator that has the skill set to break down these foundational concepts, while also being fun, enthusiastic, and engaging leaders for our elementary-aged students.
Our tutors go through intensive, ongoing training to ensure they create safe and supportive learning environments, where students are given the space to work through new concepts. Tutors encourage students to make mistakes and build the understanding that math is meant to be challenging. Our company’s philosophy is steeped in the Growth Mindset framework…and our tutors integrate this attitude (talents are not given to us, but rather are developed with hard work and the right attitude) into each class.
Q: Why Revolution? What makes you the best choice?
A: 70% of students in 3rd grade say they are “good at math”. This dramatically dips to 30% by the time they reach high school. With the growing number of careers being STEM-focused, it is critical that a program like Revolution Math now exists. Revolution Math helps young students (Elementary School) fall in love with math – and build confidence – by making the learning process fun, engaging and highly participatory. When students are learning with Revolution Math, they are collaborating, competing, and even earning points which they can redeem for real-world prizes (game consoles, skateboards, guitars, dolls, drones, etc). Plus, they will work with the same dedicated tutor each week to drive home results and keep them on task.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: We are currently working with students from around the world (10+ countries) and would love to expand our international footprint. Revolution Math’s story-based tutoring program is universally loved by young students, and we hope to bring this program to families that either love math or want to bolster that love of math in their kiddos.
Revolution Math partners with schools to be there defacto supplementary math program for both remediation and enrichment. These partnerships have been overwhelmingly positive with the overarching goal of helping thousands of students in dozens of communities across the United States. Our 2019-2020 goal is to onboard another 100 schools. To do so, we are giving free access to our program so kids can try it out and determine if it is a good fit from them and their individual learning styles. Our social mission is to never turn away a family based on cost, and we continue our goal making this program available to everyone!
