Plugable Technologies was founded in 2009 with the goal of “building a better device company.” They saw the opportunity to evolve the peripheral experience with a focus on better products, better information and better support.
Below is our recent interview with Bernie Thompson, the owner of Pugable:
Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Plugable?
A: From the launch of our first USB 2.0 thin client to today’s broad product line of high performance docking stations, hubs and more, Plugable has launched over 100 products and sold millions of units around the globe. Plugable Technologies is a Seattle-area small tech company success story as it has become one of the world’s best-known brands for USB, Bluetooth, and power-related devices.
Q: You’ve recently introduced USB-C Mini Docking Station with 85W power delivery/charging; could you tell us something more?
A: Plugable’s USB-C Mini Docking Station with Power Delivery enables more things to be done over single cable than was ever possible before. This dock is one of the most compact and powerful docks on the market today. You can get things larger docks offer in a smaller package with fewer chips required. It is so small it can mount on the back of your monitor with a vesa mount or sit on your desk while barley taking up any desk space, but with that it provides the ability to add an external HDMI display while simultaneously providing up to 85W of power to charge your system and expanding your connectivity with Ethernet, audio input/output, and four USB ports to connect your peripherals – all through a single USB-C cable!
Q: What is unique about Plugable and how does it stand out from competition?
A: We built the company focusing on better products, better information, and better support. We achieve better products by focusing on the feedback customers give from our online sales. From this feedback, we are always improving each and every one of our products. For providing better information, we leverage our online presence on our website and Amazon. It is hard to know which products are good or bad or sometimes what it does. We put an enormous amount of information online. We receive Amazon reviews which helps us get the inside scoop on people’s real experiences. On the support side of our business, we do not have a call center or any overseas employees. All of our support is done right out of our Redmond, WA headquarters with the engineers who help design and build our products. We can do this because all of our support is done online through email. We are then rewarded through great experiences and great reviews.
Q: What is your best selling product?
A: Our best selling product is our USB 3.0 Universal Laptop Docking Station or UD-3900. It has been the #1 docking station on Amazon for over two years. This docking station gives you the ability to connect up to two additional monitors and nine accessories – all through a single USB cable.
Q: What are your plans for 2018?
A: USB is evolving fast right now. There is a bunch of exciting new technology coming out. Thunderbolt 3 is going to be integrated into new computers. USB charging is going to expand into new areas such as phones. Today we carry a laptop and connect to a dock, tomorrow we could be carrying our phone in our pocket and connecting it to a dock.
