Panasonic Automotive Systems (PAS) is announcing that it has joined the Open Invention Network (OIN). PAS is a leading global provider of advanced technologies, such as infotainment systems, to automakers around the globe. By joining OIN, PAS is helping to facilitate the strong development of open source technologies.
Panasonic Automotive Systems has been a consistent and substantial contributor to multiple OSS communities, such as Automotive Grade Linux. These efforts are central to its work in developing OSS technologies and include leading the standardization of VirtIO – a key virtualization technology for Software Defined Vehicles (SDV).

OIN is the largest patent non-aggression community in history, with more than 4,000 global members. It is financially supported by IBM / Red Hat, Google, NEC, Philips, Sony and Toyota. OIN’s strength lies in its system of royalty-free cross-licenses for patents related to key technology building blocks. This framework ensures that members do not assert patent rights over core Linux and related OSS technologies, creating a patent non-aggression zone that has fostered open source investment, growth and stability.
As a community, OIN members practice patent non-aggression in core Linux and adjacent open source technologies by cross-licensing Linux System patents to one another. As open source has become pervasive, OIN’s cross license addresses more than 4,500 software packages and has evolved to include Linux and adjacent open source technologies produced by projects focused on automotive, fintech, mobile communications, computing, cloud, IoT, and embedded, among others.
