Below is our recent interview with Evan Buist, the Founder & Managing Director at Melodie:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Melodie is a tech-first boutique music licensing company & publisher based in Sydney, Australia. We provide quality music for creators, businesses and creative platforms. Powered by AI search tools, and with an award-winning roster of artists, Melodie makes it fast, affordable and incredibly easy to find and license great music for any type of content.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: We recently hired music industry veteran, Gary Helsinger, as SVP Licensing & Creative, heading up Melodie’s U.S. film, television and advertising business.

Gary has spent time as an A&R / Licensing executive at Spirit, Universal and Chrysalis, where he discovered artists including Tool, Jeff Buckley and The Smashing Pumpkins. He was also a member of the multi-platinum prop-rock band, Green Jellÿ. Gary is extremely connected and experienced in this industry, the ideal person to lead our sync business in the U.S.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: Melodie offers a value-driven pricing model, an elegant user experience, as well as pre-cleared master & publishing rights for all media usage, globally.

We have two core products – licensing an exclusive catalogue of authentic music via the Melodie Platform, typically for broadcast for media businesses like television production companies and film studios, then we also have the Melodie API for creative platform partners offering UGC tools such as text-to-speech, crowd-sourced video, e-learning, video/podcast creation and more. It’s a huge growth area that we’re really excited to be driving.

Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: We are currently expanding our services to the U.S. after 5 years of successful operation in Australia, where we have been providing copyright-safe music to creative technology platforms via a unique API product and have more than a million minutes of music broadcasted in various programs including Australian Ninja Warrior, Bondi Rescue, Real Housewives of Melbourne, Deadly Women, Drunk History, Love Island Australia, Monster Croc Wrangler, One Born Every Minute, and Territory Cops.

With Gary onboard, we’re excited to ramp up U.S.-based relationships with prominent film, television and advertising companies, as well as continuing to grow our catalogue of high-quality music from local and international acts.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: Our aim has always been to simplify access to great music through technology. Melodie’s platform houses an exclusive, boutique catalogue of diverse and rarely heard music from over 100 composers and independent artists. At the moment, we have over 20,000 tracks on our platform, and we want to ensure that all our users will find the music they need.

In partnership with our friends at Musiio, Melodie users can find the music they need faster and with more accuracy than ever before. They can also search for music without words, just by using an audio reference. It’s a little bit like Google Reverse Image Search, but for audio.

Aside from our AI-search tools, we have meticulously kept metadata, tagged by real humans, allowing users to filter results using multiple categories such as genre, mood, purpose, BPM, instrument and key. Our music supervision skills are our currency. If we’re going to tag something as melancholic or gritty, we believe these tags will be more consistently accurate than using AI alone, because we’re human.

And lastly, we have a purpose here at Melodie: to support a thriving creative community. As composers ourselves, we believe in paying our artists fairly and split all revenue streams equally. We don’t earn a cent until our composers do. We also have three simple core values: be passionate, be curious, be kind.
