Below is our recent interview with Daniel Hofmann, Chief Executive Officer at Hornetsecurity:
Q: Daniel, what is Hornetsecurity?
A: Founded in 2007, Hornetsecurity is a leading global email security and backup provider.
Our mission is to protect cloud-based communication and ensure business continuity and compliance by deploying next-generation AI solutions for companies of all sizes so they can focus on their core businesses. We shape technological progress, rather than keep up with it. The company remains at the forefront of developing tools to combat the latest advancements in cyberattacks.
We focus especially on Microsoft 365, and we believe our flagship product is the most extensive cloud security solution for Microsoft 365 on the market.
Hornetsecurity has ten worldwide offices and is headquartered in Hanover, Germany. Hornetsecurity Inc. is based in Pittsburgh, PA, and we have other North American offices in Washington D.C. and Montreal, Canada.
We operate through a global network of 5,000+ channel partners and MSPs and 11 redundant, secured data centers. Our services are used by more than 50,000+ businesses and organizations across the globe.
Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?
A: Companies and organizations need to protect their data and their employees against cyber-attacks, regardless of their location or industry. The bulk of these attacks are sent by email, so they need a robust cloud security system that provides comprehensive email protection. They also need backup, disaster recovery and business continuity functionality. Hornetsecurity meets this need by providing these services in one comprehensive solution that sets their minds at rest.
Hornetsecurity has adopted a particular focus on solutions for Microsoft 365. This is because Microsoft 365 is so widely used by businesses and is therefore highly attractive to cyber-criminals because of the gains they may make. Many Microsoft 365 users think the built-in protection it provides is adequate, but this is not the case: Microsoft 365 assists collaboration and communications environment, rather than being a security solution. Users should therefore boost its defenses with robust, tried-and-tested third-party solutions like Hornetsecurity’s 365 Total Protection to enhance email security and data loss prevention.
365 Total Protection is the only solution on the market to cover all aspects of security, compliance and backup for Microsoft 365.
It is available in different editions to suit different business needs and delivers state-of-the-art email security that protects against spam, viruses, phishing and ransomware; plus email signatures and disclaimers, as well as automated email continuity and legally compliant email archiving. It also includes backup and recovery functionality for endpoints and Microsoft 365 data in mailboxes, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint. Customers can also benefit from Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), which secures companies against targeted and individual attacks via email, be they ransomware, spear phishing, CEO fraud, phishing emails, and blended attacks.
In addition to industry-standard detection measures such as sandboxing and URL rewriting, Hornetsecurity also relies on high-quality engines like URL scanning, freezing, malicious document decryption, and AI-based detection mechanisms such as targeted fraud forensics.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement and why this research is so important?
A: Our latest study is one in a series of quarterly surveys that we organize about topics that re of interest to our partners and customers. The latest one, our hybrid cloud adoption survey, interviewed 900+ IT professionals and found that the majority of businesses (93%) are adopting a hybrid of cloud and on-premise solutions, or migrating fully to the cloud within 5 years. Half of respondents (51%) reported that they will be ‘mostly in the cloud’ in 5 years, with one or two workloads remaining on premise. 28% of respondents said they will remain ‘mostly on premise’, with a workload or two in the cloud.
Understanding how businesses are adapting – be it to threats or new technologies, for example, hybrid cloud, or the uptake of Microsoft 365 – helps us to address problems or concerns they have while gaining important insights about their mindset when it comes to technology and security; we apply these insights to product development.
I must add that research is a fundamental part of our daily operations. We strongly believe that awareness-building is important for our partners and customers, and it is our role as email security experts to keep abreast of what is happening in this area and to inform the public of the latest trends and threats. We therefore publish informative blogs and issue monthly and annual reports detailing the latest threats, describing trends and sharing insights.
We have our own in-house Security Labs that constantly conduct research and analyses. It helps our experts to identify and predict next steps in terms of threats, so that we can continue to fully protect our customers through our solutions. The team also researches new ways of doing things, by evolving current technologies and approaches.
We do not stop there.
Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: Hornetsecurity’s goal is to allow customers to focus on their core business while providing the expertise needed to protect their systems through a portfolio of high-performance cloud security products to match the needs of different businesses. This is achieved through continuous innovation, in-house research and development.
The company’s goal is to preempt and satisfy its customers’ cybersecurity, disaster recovery, business continuity and compliance needs. As a result, it is constantly innovating and introducing new offerings as well as enhancing the services in its current portfolio. Some exciting launches are planned for later this year including brand new solutions.
We will continue building on our expertise in providing robust cloud-based email security in the B2B space, expanding our suite of services to meet evolving customer needs.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: We don’t take “That’s not possible” for an answer: I firmly believe that there is always a solution; sometimes it is acceptable and sometimes not; yet, not doing anything is not the correct way to approach a problem. We are not a conservative company – we love new developments and methodologies, to keep growing and innovating. It’s what drives us to achieve great things.
