Flow Robotics A/S is a Denmark-based designer and producer of robots for automated liquid handling with a vision of helping labs across the world transition from manual to automated pipetting.
The company makes automation accessible to all by breaking down technology barriers with the intuitive and user-friendly robot, flowbot® ONE.
Here is our recent interview with Mette Hansson, Head of Marketing at Flow Robotics:
Q: Can you tell us something more about your recent announcement?
A: We have recently opened a subsidiary in North America, Flow Robotics Inc., and we are looking forward to expanding in the U.S.
In 2020, American Society for Clinical Pathology found that 85 percent of laboratory professionals suffer from burnout; 36 percent struggle with inadequate staffing; and 32 percent face a heavy workload and pressure to complete all testing on time during the COVID-19 pandemic. flowbot® ONE can help relieve the workers of all of that.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?
A: flowbot® ONE takes over many of the repetitive and burdensome manual pipetting tasks in a laboratory. This reduces the manual workload significantly and, in turn, the work-related injuries that comes from working in fixed positions. It also speeds of the process and enables lab personnel to engage in other more valuable activities, increasing the productivity of the lab in general.
It is a plug and play solution with high precision and is developed for immediate adjustment. It does not require programming skills and can be used by anyone, so there is no need for complicated programming if a procedure changes in a lab. flowbot® ONE can integrate to devices positioned on the deck or externally to the system.
The robot can play a role in a wide range of pipetting applications and tasks in the lab. This includes, PCR and qPCR, normalization, sample aliquoting, microplate filing, next generation sequencing (NGS), ELISA sample preparation, assay development, screening, reformatting, cherry picking, transferring, serial dilution, plate replication and reformatting.
The technology is setting a precedent across the world in life sciences, healthcare and academia for faster and more accurate lab results, and helps labs achieve a more sustainable setup where humans and robots can work in parallel.
Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months?
A: Flow Robotics’ focus remains on developing easy and intuitive software and making automation technology accessible for all. The company is always looking for ways to expand and meet the challenges of tomorrow.
In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a need for less human interaction in the laboratories. We are currently looking towards expanding the applications of flowbot® ONE to meet that demand. In addition, we are adding new ways of ensuring a sterile work environment and contamination prevention.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: We value our relationship with our customers highly and enjoy following their progress. Some of our customers are so excited about their robots that they name them. We have a customer named her flowbot® ONE James Bond as it was robot number 7. Fun exchanges like that always make us smile, and we are happy if we can make a difference in the Labtech community.
