Below is our recent interview with Jessica Marshall, President and co-Owner of Custom Comet:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Custom Comet is a promotional product and custom merchandise company based out of Portland, Oregon. We specialize in products that are unique and more difficult to produce.

As of this interview, our product line includes air fresheners, coasters, coffee sleeves, lapel pins, patches, and stickers. There is a number of other products we can create too, but the one’s mentioned are currently the staples of our business.

The company was founded in 2016 and is comprised of people who have experience in both promotional products and the tech industry. It’s given us a perfect mix of knowledge in not only what we make, but how it is made. We’ve been able to utilize technology to innovate in the manufacturing process as well as create a more seamless process for our customers.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: Recently, we have started offering our lapel pins to the public. It’s a product we have extensive expertise in, but had limited to our existing customers for some time. But as the company grew and our capacity increased, it is now a product we can offer to anyone.

Our pins have a diverse group of customers too. While some are your traditional corporate lapel pins, we have the expertise and technology to create incredibly detailed pins for artists as well. And we’ve even expanded this to sports trading pins. As baseball and softball season heats up, we’ve been busy making some creative pins that youth teams trade at tournaments.

Q: How has technology helped Custom Comet grow?

A: Technology is like the glue that keeps everything together in the company. For instance, our biggest advantage is that we have a talented team of in-house artists. Most companies outsource this aspect overseas to mixed results.

To build a skilled art team, you have to be willing to look all across the country for the best talent. So there are some members of the team that work remotely. We utilize technology for communications, secure file sharing, and creating designs that can be translated into a physical product.

And this extends to everyone at the company. Our goal has been to take a group of talented individuals and create a system where we can all work as one unit making special products for our customers.

Q: How has technology helped make better products?

A: A great example of how we utilize technology is in our custom air fresheners. Our art team takes something as simple as a logo or a sketch and converts it into a digital proof for the customer. This shows them precisely what their air freshener will look like down to the retail packaging and string color.

To do this, we utilize top-of-the-line design software. It allows us to precisely match colors and distinguish where the cuts are made to give the air freshener a unique shape. Even something as simple as to where the string should be located so the air freshener hangs evenly in your rear-view mirror utilizes technology. This has helped us become the largest manufacturer of custom-shaped air fresheners in the country with a reputation that is unrivaled.

Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: A lot of growth. 2021 saw us expand into some new products and we plan to continue that in 2022. We’re putting the finishing touches on our line of custom challenge coins, and have some PVC products in the pipeline as well.

From a technology standpoint, we want to make it easier for our customers to communicate with us. Expanding our SMS support is a priority as well as building out a customer portal so that new and existing customers can better handle their ordering needs. Since there is so much customization in our products, communication between our support team, artists, and our customers is incredibly important.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: We really care about our customers and what we sell. I know that’s a line all companies throw out all the time, but it’s really true with Custom Comet.

Our company works with a lot of small businesses. And we understand that this stuff can be new and complicated for them. Not every small business can afford to have a graphic designer on staff or someone with extensive knowledge in promotional products. So we go out of our way to help. Our artists will offer suggestions or make changes for you free of charge. You can pick up a phone and talk to us directly about our products.

Overall, we’re a tight-knit group of people who love bringing someone’s vision for a product to light.
