Below is our recent interview with Jason Starr, Owner of Pop Jots:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: My company is called Pop Jots. It is a subsidiary of another company I own, called Pop Radish Communications, LLC. I founded Pop Radish in April 2021 and founded Pop Jots in November 2021. The reason why I’m just barely launching my business now is that I wanted to give myself enough time to build up my website and my brand’s style before I started finding clients.

Pop Jots is a new marketing and advertising company specializing in writing persuasive sales messages to help businesses connect with customers and grow their brands. This process of writing marketing, advertising, and sales messages is called copywriting. Anytime you see a billboard on the side of the road, view a digital advertisement on Facebook, or hear an ad on the radio, someone wrote that message. The person who wrote that message is called a copywriter.

Originally, Pop Radish was going to be the name of my copywriting company, but then I realized there were too many things I wanted to do to help other businesses grow. For example, I wanted to do copywriting for other companies, but I also wanted to create online courses about strategic communication topics.

Plus, shortly after creating Pop Radish Communications, I started to feel like the name “Pop Radish” wasn’t that great for a copywriting business. As a result, I decided to form Pop Jots as a subsidiary of Pop Radish Communications.

I ultimately chose the name “Pop Jots” for my copywriting business because it does an excellent job of hinting at what my business is all about. “Pop Jots” literally means “standout writing.”

By naming my company Pop Jots, I’m trying to tell other business owners, “Hey, look, I can use my writing to help you stand out and grow. Pick my service if you want results.” That’s where I got the idea for my name.

Now I have one company for each of the ways I want to help others. I have Pop Jots to create persuasive written advertising messages for business owners, and I have Pop Radish Communications for teaching online courses about strategic communication topics to individuals.

Some of the topics I might eventually create online courses on are public speaking and crisis communication. Those online courses are still in development, though, so it might be a while before I’m ready to release them to the public.

In the meantime, I’m mainly focusing on growing the Pop Jots brand and helping as many businesses with copywriting as possible.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: There are a couple of different things I’d like to highlight from my announcement. First of all, the biggest thing I should emphasize is that I’ve had a lot of experience learning and applying various strategic communication concepts over the past few years.

For example, in 2019 and 2020, I spent a couple of years getting a Master’s in Communication degree at Purdue University. In this program, I concentrated in Integrated Communication and Advertising. Some of the classes I took included integrated marketing, advertising, public relations, social media, strategic communication writing, research methods, and persuasion.

I also earned a couple of professional certifications in 2021. The first of these was a professional certification in digital marketing from the American Marketing Association and the Digital Marketing Institute in February of 2021. The second was a certificate in copywriting from the Blackford Centre for Copywriting in August of 2021.

These various classes, degrees, and certifications taught me so much about how copywriting works. For instance, I learned how to research a target audience’s needs, how to use my writing to persuade others, and how to help businesses communicate with their audiences in a meaningful way. All of that contributes to helping me be a better marketer, advertiser, and copywriter for my clients.

Additionally, I’ve spent over seven years working for a small video production company in Salt Lake City, Utah. This company, called SkyVibe and/or Two Little Hands Productions, specializes in creating viral children’s videos on YouTube and educational shows for kids on DVD and Blu-ray.

Since working for SkyVibe and Two Little Hands, I’ve helped shoot and edit hundreds of videos that have gone viral on over 20 YouTube channels. I also helped grow many of these channels from the ground up. Today there are billions of views and millions of subscribers across all of the YouTube channels I’ve contributed to for this company.

This experience is helpful for my copywriting career because it has taught me how to tell engaging stories that connect with millions of people.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offerings?

A: I’d love to give you more insight into my offerings. I currently offer 12 types of writing and copywriting services. Most of my services will be provided for digital and online mediums. I might do copywriting for other mediums, too, though, if the need for that arises.

My writing services are as follows:

  • Advertisements
  • Direct mail
  • Email
  • Infographics
  • Newsletters
  • Press releases
  • Product descriptions
  • Radio spots
  • Sales letters
  • Search engine marketing ads
  • Social media ads
  • Video scripts

Those are the services I offer for now, but I may eventually expand into other writing services like speech writing, media kits, and proofreading. I will test out what my clients want before I provide additional services, though.

I also plan to write copy for many different types of businesses. Some of the organizations I want to write for include:

  • Startups
  • Non-profits
  • Food
  • Finance
  • Education
  • Family
  • Self-help
  • Creative professionals.

However, I may adjust the industries I write for based on my client’s needs. These are just the industries I’m starting with because they are the ones I’ve either read about or had experience with the most.

Q: What can we expect from your company in the next six months? What are your plans?

A: I’ve got a few plans for the next six months. First, I want to grow the Pop Jots brand and serve many clients.

Copywriting is something that every business needs to sell products and services, and I want to help as many people as possible. I’d especially like it if I could work with some high-profile companies, like Walmart or some major company like that.

Next, I would love to grow enough to hire some people to help me scale my services faster. Right now, it’s just me running the business, so there are a lot of responsibilities for me to juggle.

Third, I want to start some YouTube channels that talk about various copywriting, marketing, and advertising concepts. This way, if people have questions about these kinds of topics, they can have a resource to turn to for help or inspiration.

Those are the three main things I plan to accomplish over the next six months. As for everything else, I’ll have to see how things evolve.

Q: What is a unique thing about your company that people might not know?

A: There are a couple of things that make my company stand out.

First, my company is unique in that I try to make my services as customized and as personalized as possible. I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to meet the needs of both my clients and their customers.

Second, I’m good at putting a lot of focus and energy into the projects I do. I like to get my projects done as accurately and effectively as possible.

When I was in college, this work ethic usually showed up as I took detailed notes, memorized all of my class materials, and got good grades. As proof of this, I finished my Bachelor’s degree in 2013 with a 3.98 GPA, and I ended my Master’s degree in 2020 with a 4.0 GPA.

This work ethic helps me be a good copywriter because I will take the time required to produce quality work. I don’t believe in doing my work half-heartedly or rushing to get a project done too quickly. That approach never gets excellent long-term results. I’m confident my clients will appreciate this type of approach to the work I do for them.
