Below is our recent interview with Tessa Lau, CEO & Founder of Dusty Robotics:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Dusty creates robot-powered tools for the modern construction workforce.

Dusty’s flagship product is the FieldPrinter, an autonomous “printer on wheels” that automatically marks locations of construction installations to within 1/16th of an inch directly on the floor so crews can then build on top of these instructions. FieldPrinter interprets the layout data generated in building information modeling (BIM) software that construction companies use to design and build large buildings. General and specialty contractors use Dusty to print “IKEA instructions for construction” in the field, eliminating errors and confusion about what to build where.

Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: When the pandemic first hit, one of the tailwinds that propelled robotic construction forward is the fact that robots are immune. With increasing fears of human-to-human contact fueling demand to limit personnel on job sites, builders looked to robotic automation to increase the productivity of the few workers allowed on site at a time.

In addition, during any recession, investment in productivity-enhancing technology tends to increase. Construction robotics is no different. Builders are always looking to invest in technology that allows them to maintain a reduced workforce while meeting or exceeding their production targets. Robotic automation has benefited from the pandemic and created enormous opportunities for the companies in this space to push forward change within this industry.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: The FieldPrinter leverages advanced robotics technology to quickly and accurately print enhanced layout on construction sites. Construction tolerances need to be as precise as possible, necessitating accuracy within 1/16″, whereas the software and hardware powering mobile robotics is typically only accurate to 2″. We’ve developed a custom hardware+software stack that enables our system to achieve an order of magnitude more accuracy than any other mobile robot.

Our entire robot platform has been designed from the ground up to solve the specific problem of precise printing on construction sites. Our team combines expertise in robot navigation, control systems, printing technology, mechatronics, electrical engineering, full-stack software, construction, and architecture to bring this product to market. And we are actively hiring in all those areas!

Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: We’ve proven that our product works and solves a critical problem for our customers. We just completed our millionth square foot of commercial production layout. Videos from our production jobs are going viral on social, and potential customers are reaching out to us in record numbers to learn how to get Dusty on their projects. With an amazing amount of customer pull from the market, we will use this Series A to grow our team, build more robots, and expand to other areas of the United States that are eagerly waiting for Dusty to become available.
