Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?
A: BellSoft was founded in 2017 by a group of developers who had previously worked for Oracle and Sun Microsystems. Since its origin, the company has been focused on delivering the complete Java experience, adapting this famous coding language to new business requirements and demands. Today, BellSoft offers the most sustainable Java journey, based on the range of tools we offer. Our flexible approach empowers developers and architects to build, run, and manage Java applications on any platform, in any environment.
BellSoft is one of the largest contributors to OpenJDK, a member of the JCP Executive Committee and GraalVM advisory boards, and an active participant in Linux and CNCF foundations.
We serve millions of use cases and global brands across every industry, helping companies build for the future every day; among our clients are such giants in software as VMware, Pivotal, Spring, JetBrains.
Q: Any highlights on your recent announcement?
A: On September 28th, we announced the release of two new products: Alpaquita Linux and Alpaquita Cloud Native Platform.
Alpaquita Linux is an open source product and is the enhanced version of Alpine Linux only with tighter security, decreased size, and optimized for Java.
Alpaquita Cloud Native Platform is a perfect end-to-end solution for cloud environments and container deployment, allowing a significant reduction of RAM and increased performance metrics of the Java microservices executed in Kubernetes and other orchestrators.
The platform consists of these software components:
- Liberica JDK Lite, a lightweight and secure open source Java Development Kit to create and execute Java applications on any platform or in any cloud.
- Alpaquita Linux, a brand new and the only Linux distribution tailor-made for running Java applications.
- Liberica Native Image Kit, a tool for creating tiny native images specifically relevant for cloud deployment.
Together, these platform layers provide a comprehensive development and cloud deployment environment.

Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?
A: We started to work on these products as there was no perfect Linux distribution for Java microservices. Those available on the market were either too heavy (therefore unsuitable for enterprise containers) or lacked full security suite and LTS releases.
As a result, we produced Alpaquita Linux OS, which has an enhanced level of security based on TCK-verified runtime with the broadest range of supported platforms and long-term support. Our engineers were also able to decrease the size of the OS further.
Alpaquita Linux and Alpaquita Cloud Native Platform present the perfect instruments to lower operational costs and increase the performance of Java applications in the cloud. The market is seeking such solutions, as enterprises are experiencing rising costs and trying to adapt their software architecture to the cloud in the best possible ways. Implementing BellSoft software components will allow you to attain this business goal.
Q: What can we expect from your company in the next 6 months? What are your plans?
A: We plan to continue enhancing the Java journey in the cloud. More precisely, our next half-year’s agenda will include:
Alpaquita security advisory;
Pre-built Alpaquita images natively consumable in k8s and virtualized cloud environments;
Improved Alpaquita and Liberica Lite performance and integration;
Continuous and timely delivery of update releases for all products.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?
A: The primary mission of our company is to continue delivering a modern and complete Java runtime corresponding to new business demands, allowing Java to stay on top of the coding languages for enterprises.
The secret behind our software’s popularity is hidden in the fact that the BellSoft core team has spent over twenty years in Java development, which is rare for this market level of expertise. Some of our colleagues were previously involved in optimizing Java for embedded systems. Our team’s experience certainly impels us forward in our mission to pioneer OpenJDK towards greener, more sustainable software solutions, with solid security features and authentic technical support.
