Below is our recent interview with Brian Malkerson, Chief Revenue Officer at Attentive:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to your company?

A: Attentive is the most comprehensive text messaging marketing solution for innovative brands that humanizes the consumer experience. Attentive’s vision is to reinvent business to consumer communication and commerce for the mobile age.

Over the past six years, Attentive has been building a platform to change the way brands interact with consumers through personalized text message conversations and frictionless commerce experiences. Using real-time behavioral data, Attentive automatically sends engaging text messages to each subscriber at every step of the customer lifecycle. More than 4,000 leading businesses including Coach, CB2, Steve Madden, and TGI Fridays rely on Attentive and see almost 20% of total online revenue driven by SMS.

Q:Any highlights on your recent announcement?

A: As one of the fastest growing SaaS companies to date, Attentive is able to innovate at scale and empower conversational commerce for the thousands of brands that we work with. The company is on track to drive over $12 billion in revenue for brands this year, almost tripling the $4.5 billion in revenue generated in 2020. We power personalized marketing programs for brands of all sizes that engage over 200 million consumers. We have also been recognized by the industry, including Forbes Cloud 100 and Inc. Q: Can you give us more insights into your offering?

A: In 2021, mobile will make up 75% of e-commerce and SMS drives 10x more revenue than email per message, with 99% open rates and 30% click-through rates. Text messaging is the consumers’ channel of choice across multiple generations, and Attentive helps to humanize the shopping experience by focusing on personalization and the customer experience.

SMS delivers a personalized experience. Consumers shared they want to receive relevant content from brands they have opt-ed into. Brands that engage shoppers at every step of the customer journey–delivering personalized, two-way experiences and conversations from acquisition to retention–will give customers what they desire. Typically, a consumer’s texts are reserved for close friends, family, and their favorite brands, so it inherently feels more personal and like a direct connection.

Also, consumers’ expectations of how they engage with brands have evolved and they want brands to meet them where they are – on their phones. We’ve seen that nurturing these relationships leads to SMS being a top growth channel for companies. Text messaging is embedded more as part of the full consumer lifecycle and meets the customer where they already are.

Q: What can we expect from your company in next 6 months? What are your plans?

A: This year, Attentive acquired two companies, Privy and Tone. Attentive built its platform with a focus on delivering personalized SMS messages to consumers, with the vision for those messages to evolve into 1:1 conversations at scale. With the acquisitions, we are working to realize this vision and be a leader in two-way conversational commerce.

Q: What is the best thing about your company that people might not know about?

A: As a remote-first company, we are committed to having a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment and are putting the work in at all levels to achieve that. One way we support our team members is through AWAKE (short for: A Will to take Action for more Knowledge and Empowerment) our employee-led initiative that celebrates and advances our community’s experiences through a variety of ERGs. We are actively focused on recruiting from a more diverse talent pool through our partnerships with a number of organizations to align with strong talent from different demographic groups. We are also proud to be a part of Base10’s Advancement Initiative which is donating 50% of the fund’s carried interest, directly to Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) to create student scholarships and support university endowments.
